1. "Combustion" – 4:11 2. "Electric Red" – 5:53 3. "Bleed" – 7:22 4. "Lethargica" – 5:49 5. "obZen" – 4:27 6. "This Spiteful Snake" – 4:55 7. "Pineal Gland Optics" – 5:14 8. "Pravus" – 5:13 9. "Dancers to a Discordant System" – 9:36 Blasting off with "Combustion", obZen sets the bar high. Meshuggah's signature rhytms have seem to be misplaced by regular 4/4 bars. Is it for real? Have they lost their mind and their originality? No, "Combustion" is merely a warm-up for their three year hiatus "Electric Red" is a real filler song, meant to create a strong contrast with the next song, "Bleed". "Bleed" is fast paced, pounding and catchy, a rather large difference between the older work, namely Nothing and Catch-33/I, which tended to be slow and pounding. "obZen" the title song is what you expect a title song to be. It will burn itself on your eardrums. Jazz solos and synths galore. A bizarre combination of both modern and classical audial influences make this a unique song. "Dancers to a Discordant System" is a typical Meshuggah ending, with a riff that you will remember till the day you die. All in all, they are a set of unique artists who will keep surprising the world with their music, obZen is another masterpiece to add to your collection of metal music. |
